Microsoft App Ink to Code Will Help Developers Coding UI

Most user interface designs begin as drawings on whiteboards or scrap paper. The Microsoft Garage takes that process to the next level by giving developers an app that allows them to use inking for coding UI. Those inked drawings can then be exported into code that will save developers from coding those interfaces from scratch.

How do I get a list of all the files I’ve shared in OneDrive for Business?

In traditional OneDrive user interface this was a simple click to see the shared files and even today in OneDrive personal it’s easy to click between those that have been shared with me and those that I have shared.  In basic governance and compliance, being able to manage file sharing and controlling the sharing is of paramount importance.  If you have all your files in a single view you can see visually what has been shared and look at each file to see that beyond the fact it’s been shared you can see who it’s been shared with.

If you an admin in Office 365 you can go into the Usage Reports to see the activity and usage reports.  View Activity by Files or by Users.  Like what you see?  You can export either report into Excel and interrogate it even further.

SNAGHTMLffca25b

In this report you can see what’s been shared, viewed, synced, internal and external sharing counts and by file or by user.  It’s quite useful and I think many have no idea it exists.  You can read more about the reporting portal in this blog post from the Office team.  The SharePoint, Exchange and OneDrive Activity report can be really quite powerful in understanding activity, usage and adoption including things like… what are people sharing externally?

In addition the Unified Audit Log has a lot of options that you can look at including uploaded, accessed, viewed files or deleted files:

image

What about for users who aren’t admins?

Good news.  The feature has been announced and was detailed at the recent SharePoint Saturday San Diego event.  A few cool features were announced in San Diego including a new point in time file recovery and rollback for OneDrive to recover from malware and corruption of your files.

Roadmap?  Yep.  The Shared by Me view in OneDrive is coming in Q1 according to the roadmap.office.com.  Simply search by OneDrive and scroll down to In Development to find the feature.

image

There is more coming to OneDrive including a new personalized list of the files I’ve shared internally and externally as well as time limited compliance options for external sharing and brand new recovery options.

I highly recommend this very recent keynote address by Stephen Rose Senior Product Manager from OneDrive.  He went into detail about the new sharing features as well as the recovery piece.  Cool stuff.

New Pluralsight Course: Reporting with PowerShell HTML and Enhanced HTML

My 12th Pluralsight course, and 4th PowerShell focused one in a row is now out, and this time is on a really interesting topic: How to create HTML reports with PowerShell. PowerShell is an amazing tool to gather information from all of your Microsoft systems, including Office 365, but let’s be honest, a CSV or HTML report is not really pretty. This is where HTML comes in! By using PowerShell to gather the information, and rendering it with HTML and enhanced by CSS you can really create beautiful and useful reports.

PowerShell HTML

Let’s take a look at some examples! In the example below, you can see an HTML Table that is Paginated, has Search enabled, and the Service Status color depends on the value of the content inside, so you can quickly see the services that are stopped!

PowerShell HTML

Another example here is a computer report, that first shows the BIOS information as a list, the Disk information with a Free Percentage % that is color coded, and all the Services to Investigate in a nice table!

PowerShell HTML

Here is another example of Office 365 Report of licenses and users!

PowerShell HTML

You can check out the course today on Pluralsight at the following link: http://spvlad.com/PSHTML or if you do not have an account yet, you can get a free 10-day Trial over here: http://spvlad.com/PS10DayTrial !

When Using Angular, Be Sure to Convert to JSON Using `angular.toJson`

This is a quick one, but if it has the potential to bite you, you’ll thank me for it later.

Image from http://ift.tt/2CBpnDQ

I use AngularJS generally these days when I want to write solutions in SharePoint, whether on premises or in SharePoint Online. Yes, that’s the older version of Angular, meaning versions in the 1.x range.

When you’re using any JavaScript to work with SharePoint data, though, you’ll probably end up converting the data from string-based JSON to JavaScript objects and if you want to save them back to SharePoint, you’ll then convert the data from JavaScript objects back to string-based JSON.

There are two primary ways for do the second conversion:

  • JSON.stringify – All “modern” browsers support this function and it works great. If you’ve been doing JavaScript development for a while, you’ll know this function very well – so well that you may rarely think about it when you use it.
  • angular.toJson – This is AngularJS’s version of the idea, but it’s smart specifically for objects which are under Angular’s control. In many cases, Angular augments objects with its own properties to keep track of things going on in the page. For example, $$hashkey helps Angular keep track of what objects have changed since a digest cycle.

Depending on how you manage the objects which contain your SharePoint data, you may end up with some of these additional properties on things. If you try to save a list or library item with one of these unrecognizable properties (to SharePoint, at least), you may get an error.

Because of this, it’s important to either:

  1. Delete the properties which will be seen by SharePoint as invalid before you use JSON.stringify in advance of the writes, or
  2. Use angular.toJson instead

I would recommend the latter, after getting bitten by my own code earlier this week. I had taken a great function Julie (@jfj1997) had adapted from Andrew Connell’s (@andrewconnell) earlier work on REST batching (See the article Make batch requests with the REST APIs for a link to AC’s examples.) and embedded it into a solution. Everything worked just fine for quite a while, and then we started noticing a few items missing when we expected them to have been loaded into a list – and it was our favorite type of bug: sporadic. It turned out that several of the items had Angular properties and were throwing errors in the batch loads. This was my fault – when I decided to use the function, I didn’t change JSON.stringify to angular.toJson. Once I did, all was right as rain.

Lesson learned for me (yet again!): be sure you understand exactly what the code you borrow really does.
